Asphalt milling is the process used to remove failing asphalt in a parking lot or roadway that has reached the end of its usable life.
The milling machine allows for the depth to be set anywhere from 1” to 8”. If the project requires full depth milling, then all of the asphalt is removed down to the stone base. The stone will then be graded and compacted to prepare for the new asphalt.
One benefit of milling is it allows you to control the depth of the material being removed.
This ensures the new layer of asphalt will lay flush with existing curbs and drainage structures.
The milling machine is set to the specified depth and width to remove the asphalt.
As the milling machine grinds up the asphalt it moves through a conveyor belt which loads the material into dumps trucks. The milled asphalt is brought back to the asphalt plant to be recycled and used in future paving projects.
After a surface milling project is completed the area is swept and cleaned to eliminate debris. If the areas are not swept the new asphalt will not properly bond to the older layer of asphalt.
